The summer had been very rainy in Apple Tree Notch, the home of the fairy family, the Baileys. It seemed like weeks since they had a sunny day. It was truly only three days. Twig and his two sisters, Daisy and Fern had really been making life difficult for their parents. They were flitting and darting here and there pestering their parents until Momma finally sent them to their rooms for some quiet time. Twig laid on his bed and accidentally fell asleep for a while. When he awoke he realized he had had the same dream again. He dreamed of a cabin he could build. Momma Bailey had named her children nature names and designed their clothes with their safety in mind. Very few people ever get to see a real fairy because they dress to blend into their surroundings. This being the case Twig was dressed in a shirt and pants the colors that look like twigs and if he laid very still on the ground you couldn’t pick him out from the rest of the twigs. The next day they woke up to sunshine. The Bailey fairy children were so excited they could hardly sit still long enough to eat breakfast. However this morning they had to sit just a little longer. Momma and Dad wanted to have a quick talk with them before the set them loose to the outside. They talked about the people who now lived in the big house behind Apple Tree Notch. Daisy had an encounter with the child, Tristin, and had a narrow escape. If Tristin had her way Daisy would now be standing in a vase of water up to her waist!! Momma and Dad knew it was only because the Sprite helped. A Sprite is a spirit who watches over fairy children without them realizing it. The Sprite is usually just an orb of colors: pinks, yellows, and purples but he can make himself into different shapes if needed. He does whatever he has to in order to protect the fairy children. This morning the children all agreed to be extra careful and were allowed to go outside. As soon as they got out Daisy and Fern decided to go visit the wild flowers. Daisy wanted nothing to do with the house and its new residents. Twig only had thoughts of his cabin. Twig found a spot by the big rock that he thought would be perfect. He began dragging real twigs and sticks to the area, all the while concentrating on how he would do his cabin. He was concentrating so hard he didn’t notice he wasn’t alone until it was almost too late. His only warning was he heard a branch snap as someone big stepped on it. It could be an animal but he figured he’d better become a twig just in case. It’s a good thing he did because it turned out to be the boy child of the people. Twig had heard someone say his name was Blake. He watched as Blake came closer to the rock where Twig had started his cabin. Blake saw the twigs piled together and it gave him an idea. He could build a little make believe cabin. A cabin for his size would need much more than this little one so for now he would settle for this project. Blake started picking up twigs and leaves to build the cabin with as Twig laid still and watched. Twig didn’t realize it but Sprite was watching, too. Just as Blake reached for Twig to add him to the wall of the cabin, Sprite jumped under his hand and became a thorn that stuck into Blake’s hand hard as he picked him up. “Ouch! That Hurt”, he said and dropped Twig quickly. It seemed like Twig had lain there forever when Blake finally decided he was bored with this, maybe he would run around the yard for a while. Twig laid there until he was sure Blake was gone. He still didn’t understand what had made Blake say “Ouch” when he touched him but he was grateful. Twig had been gone quite a while, he knew he needed to get back to Apple Tree Notch, his parents would be worried. Twig ran in the door all out of breath and excited with Sprite right behind him. Momma and Daddy knew something had happened when they saw Sprite. Twig told them all about the dreams he had about his cabin and how he had started to build it when the child, Blake, came along. He told them how HE had almost been used as a twig for the cabin! At that point Sprite flitted around and went out the door. As he was leaving he heard Twig say with excitement “and you’ll never guess what! Blake made the cabin just like the one I dreamed about!!!”. Twig and Blake both fell asleep easy that night. Both of them had a wonderful day.
